How to Calm Irritated Skin

How to Calm Irritated Skin

Whatever you did to piss off your skin – overdid retinol, picked at your skin, scrubbed too harshly – we know you had the best intentions, but a bad move. But it is not the end of the world and you will go back to your happy, healthy skin with some extra effort. Based on what triggered your skin in the first place, find out the perfect skincare solution that will calm it TF down.

❌Overdid acids in your skincare routine

serum dropperWe’ve all been there, when we saw a zit, applied a spot treatment, then an acid toner, and maybe some exfoliating serum. And then you woke up burnt, stretchy and red skin. Congratulations. Because you’ve burned down your skin barrier and eroded the top layer of your skin.

Calm down and stop using everything, STAT. Your new and improved skincare routine should only consist of a gentle cleanser and a nourishing moisturizer. Your skin needs to breathe, and it needs a lot of hydration. So, immediately after you cleanse your face, apply a generous layer of your moisturizer and massage it in. You may also try slugging at night. Vaseline does not clog pores, can be used by all skin types and it helps build back the broken bridge. Your skin will take 28 days to heal itself completely, so be patient, and stick to the routine.

Forgot to remove makeup at night

sleeping with makeupSleeping with the makeup on is one sin that we’ve all (knowingly) committed. One lazy night, and next day you wake up with dull, dud skin and a lot of regrets. All the makeup is now nicely settled in your pores and is choking it up. Your skin has been stripped of all its moisture and the only thing that can begin the healing journey is double cleansing. Using an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser will get to the root and lift every ounce of makeup, dirt, and impurities. Then use lots and lots of hydrating essence that will seep deep into the skin and add life to dead skin. On damp skin, apply a hyaluronic acid serum and seal in all the goodness with an ultra-nourishing moisturizer.

Picked every bump on your face

popping pimpleEven though you know you’re not supposed to do it, the weird pleasure of extracting a blackhead or a pimple is oddly satisfying. And if you’ve gone overboard and hard-picked at every little bump on your face, then you’ve brewed the recipe for a skincare disaster. The now wounded and/or bleeding pimples can be healed with a pimple patch. They contain soothing ingredients that protect the damaged skin. Leave them on for 8-10 hours or overnight. This will also reduce the chances of scarring. If you’ve meddled with a cystic acne – which are in fact underground acne that cannot be squeezed - you’ll need something to soothe the inflammation. Wrap a cube of ice in a clean cotton cloth and hold it on the acne for 10 minutes, keeping it on and off for 1 minute. Then keep your hands off your face, like forever!

Used way too much retinol

using too much retinolEveryone’s tryst with retinol begins this way – they use it every alternate day and the skin starts peeling and turning red. Which is pretty normal initially. But, if it is already accompanied by a burning sensation and you feel like your face is falling off, then you went in too fast or used a retinol that is way too strong for you. This is a prime example of – a lot of anything is bad. You can fix it by steering clear of any strong acids, peels, scrubs, or toners, and embracing hydration, a lot of it! Go all out on a hyaluronic acid serum and sheet masks. Apply the serum twice a day, and sheet mask twice to thrice every week. Then once your skin is healed, reintroduce retinol slowly. Make sure you’re using the lowest concentration, and using it once a night for week 1, twice for week 2, thrice for week 3, and then every other night indefinitely.

Use a hydrating mask like…

Birch Please Sheet Mask For Intense Hydration MRP: ₹149

You can also use the sandwich method where you add a layer of moisturizer before and after applying retinol. This considerably reduces the chances of peeling and redness.

Abide by these fixes and swear to yourself that you’ll never repeat the sins, ever again!
