We Compiled A Super Easy Beginner's Guide To Skincare

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Depending on who you ask, skincare routine varies widely, as it is highly customizable and personal. But this very thing makes it a bit confusing – how do you know what works best for you? How do you know what products to pick? With the 10-step Korean skincare routine everywhere, it can seem intimidating to start your own skincare journey.

That’s where we come in with our little book of skincare. Let us help you simplify skincare.

Easy skincare routine

Before you start buying products, you need to understand what your skin type is. If your skin gets greasy or shiny after a shower, you probably have oily skin. If it feels stretchy, it's dry. If your skin feels dry in some places but greasy in others, you probably have combination skin. If your skin reacts to every product you use, then you probably have sensitive skin.

If you are unable to figure out your skin type or have some reservations about starting a Korean skincare routine, we recommend you see a dermatologist who can point you in the right direction.

So, once you have figured out all of the above, we can start.

Step 1: Cleanse

The general rule of thumb is to cleanse your face twice every time. This is called double-cleansing and it ensures that your skin is free of all impurities, even those deep within the pores. Use an oil-based cleanser to break down dirt and makeup, and follow with a water-based cleanser to get rid of any residue.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Usually, you are supposed to exfoliate only once or twice a week. Over exfoliation can cause irritation and skin sensitivity. Exfoliating gets rid of any dead skin build-up and also helps reduce blackheads and whiteheads. Try an exfoliating mask once a week if physical exfoliators seem too harsh for you.

Step 3: Treat

If you have any issues you want to specifically address, this is the time to do so. You can tackle skin concerns like dullness, dryness, oiliness, hyperpigmentation and acne. Facial serums are high potency, lightweight topicals that contain active ingredients – like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. Pick a serum that targets the issue you want to tackle.

Step 4: Moisturize

You can pick a moisturizer that suits your skin type. As a rule of thumb, creamy moisturizers for dry skin and a gel moisturizer for oily skin. If you have sensitive skin, look for moisturizers that do not have any added fragrance or alcohol.

Step 5: Protect

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial – it prevents harmful UV rays from entering your skin. Never skip this step, even if it is an overcast, rainy day. Look for a broad-spectrum, high SPF sunscreen that’s best suited to your skin type.

Additional steps

Some good skincare practices to follow:

  • Before using any skincare product on your face, always make sure you do a patch test first. Doing so will let you know if you’re allergic to anything in the product!
  • Just because a certain ingredient or product is trending, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Only buy products according to your skin type for best results.
  • Always research the product you are looking to buy and make sure you research the ingredients beforehand as well.
