5 Signs You Could Be Using The Wrong Moisturizer
Whether you’re taking your baby steps in the world of skincare or you’re a veteran, a moisturizer surely holds a place in your vanity. It’s a by default product, no matter if you follow a 3-step or a 12-step routine. But, if you’re spending your time, money and effort on a product, you want to be sure it’s actually helping your skin, right? So, when you do find a moisturizer that suits your skin, you stick with it for months and even years. There lies the problem. Here’s why.
A moisturizer should be selected based on your skin type, true. But, what most people forget to consider is their geographical location, age, and changing seasons. If the place where you live is usually hot and humid, you will require a lightweight moisturizer. Otherwise, it will only make your skin greasy, and by the end of the day you will look like a dust ball. Same is with changing seasons. During winters, your skin may love creamy and rich textures more, which offer better nourishment and hydration. Unfortunately, even with age, skin tends to become drier, which accelerates fine lines and wrinkles. This calls for a change in routine, including your moisturizer! Lean on moisturizers that contain peptides and retinol that repair skin and accelerate cell regeneration. Which all these factors considered…
How to tell if you’re using the wrong moisturizer for your skin?
1. It is making your skin oily
Moisturizers have one job – to moisturize your skin. But if it’s also making your skin look shiny and super oily then it’s time to toss the product out. Skin that is nicely moisturized will naturally shine, but if your face looks like it’s ready to fry an egg on, you will know the difference. Look for a hydrating moisturizer that contains niacinamide or salicylic acid and skip products that are comedogenic. This will regulate sebum production and prevent your pores from clogging.

2. You’re getting bumps on your skin
If there is a sudden spurt of tiny bumps on your skin, then your moisturizer might be the culprit. They are little clusters of white bumps called milia. These may occur randomly anywhere on the face, leaving you with an uneven texture. Your skin might start feeling rough and flaky to touch. So look for a moisturizer that is calming and does not contain any pore-clogging ingredients like lanolin, beeswax and algae extracts. Note: these are not your regular whiteheads or acne, so do not try to extract or pop them.
3. Your skin feels dry after application
When your moisturizer isn’t moisturizing enough, bid goodbye to that bad boy. In spite of regular application, if your skin still feels dry and scaly or looks perpetually dull, then you might need something better. Pick a moisturizer that contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which are known to deeply hydrate and plump skin.
4. Your skin is reacting badly to it
Applying a moisturizer should make your skin feel bouncy and soft, if it’s doing anything apart from that, stop using it immediately. No questions asked. Whether it is causing rashes, stinging or itching, it’s clear that it is not compatible with your skin. This is a sign that the product is messing up with your skin’s pH levels and it’s time to buy a new moisturizer. Always make sure to patch test before buying.
5. It’s breaking out your skin
If your skin is breaking out more than usual or if there are pimples that have popped up out of nowhere, then your moisturizer is doing more harm than good. Heavy or rich textured moisturizers are not your friends here, and you might want to switch to a light-weight, fast absorbing moisturizer that your acne-prone skin will love.
