5 Signs You're Using the Wrong Skin Care Products
There is a certain thrill to opening a new skincare product, right? Especially if it is much-raved about. Everyone’s using it, there is a buzz about it on social media, and it is game-changing apparently. So, you use it for weeks and weeks…but it does nothing for you or even worse, it negatively reacts with your skin. Why did this happen? Is it you or the product? Keep scrolling to know when and if it’s time that you should call quits on a skincare product.
1. Your skin is becoming dry and flaky
Using the wrong skincare product can aggravate your existing skin condition and make it too oily or too dry. If your skin is naturally dry and tight, that’s still okay, but if you’re noticing peeling or flakiness/roughness, then your new skincare product is to blame. Over-exfoliating or using a product that is too harsh for your skin can make your skin tingle and sting.
How to fix it
It is very likely that your skin’s barrier is compromised. Avoid using acids and opt for cream-based products to revive your skin. Our Mesmerice Range perfectly fits the bill. It contains nourishing and soothing ingredients like rice water, aloe vera and olive.
2. You’re breaking out
Breakouts are a clear symptom that your skincare product is not gelling well with your skin - provided that you usually do not have an acne problem. Getting tiny small red bumps on your face is pretty normal when you use a new skincare product. However, this should only last for a maximum of three weeks. If you’re still experiencing acne or bumps on your face, then your new product can be at fault.
How to fix it
If you’ve just started using a new product and have small bumps, have some patience and continue using it for at least 3 weeks. If it’s been more than a month and the acne is persistent, then cease using the product immediately and look for acne-fighting products with tea tree oil to combat acne.
3. Your skin is becoming greasy
Your skin is usually not oily, but it is now then you might want to check the ingredient list of your product. If it contains thick and occlusive ingredients like mineral oil, lanolin or petrolatum or if the formula is not right for your skin type, then your skin can become oily. On the other hand, if you have oily skin and you’re using skincare products to reduce oiliness that can in fact back-fire. Using too many oil-reducing products at once can strip your skin’s natural oils, causing your glands to overproduce oil.
How to fix it
You need hydrating products that moisturize your skin without making it oily. Hyaluronic acid is your BFF here. It is a humectant that draws and retains moisture in skin without making your skin oily or greasy. This way your skin will stop producing excess oil and you’ll have balanced, healthy skin at the end. Our Birch Please Skin Soothing Clarifying Serum contains hyaluronic acid and birch juice that keep your skin plump.
4. Your skin burnsUsing toners or cleansers that have active ingredients in them might cause some tingling. But if your face is sensitive to touch, looks red or pink for a prolonged time and feels like it is on fire each time you wash it, please do not torture yourself in the name of skincare. Either the product is too strong for your skin to handle or your skin is too sensitive to bear the actives. In any case, you are suffering and that should end.
How to fix it
Your skin is an angered child at this moment, so the first thing you must do is stop using any actives in your routine, right from cleansing to moisturizing. Secondly, what you can do is look for products that have ceramides in them. They are skin-soothers that’ll repair the damage that is done. Lastly, you can try slugging. Apply a layer of Vaseline on your face before you sleep and wash off in the morning. This gives your skin the intense nourishment that it desperately needs. Also, as a thumb rule, whenever you try a product with actives, always patch test on your neck to check how your skin reacts.
5. Your skin is feeling tight
Skin tightness shouldn’t be ignored under any circumstance, because it is the gateway to a number of other skin issues like large pores, early signs of ageing and excess oil production. So if your skin feels tight or stretchy, especially after you’ve cleansed, you know there’s a problem.
How to fix it
Use hydrating products in your routine. Opt for pH balancing cleansers and toners that leave you with refreshed and balanced skin. Our Matcha Better Pore Clearing Skin Tonic and Yuzu Fine Vitamin C Brightening Toner are pH-balancing beauties that you must try.
If you’re experiencing any of these woes, you know it’s time to bid goodbye to your ‘miracle product.’
